Staten Island Tops Jamestown, 3-2; Contreras to Start for Staten Island Saturday

[Staten Island, NY] - The day after the power outage, the Staten Island Yankees took game one of a three game series from the Jamestown Jammers, 5-2. Melky Cabrera was the hero for the Baby Bombers, going 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Staten Island struck early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first. Cabrera reached on an error and advanced to third on a double by Enrique Cruz. Hector Zamora grounded out to second, scoring Cabrera and moving Cruz to third. Bryce Kartler singled in Cruz for the second run of the game, moved to second on a single by Edwar Gonzalez and scored when John Urick reached on an error by the catcher. Jamestown scored one in the top of the third on an RBI single by Dusty Young and closed the gap to 3-2 on a single by Xavier Arroyo. Cabrera's two-run home run in their half of the inning gave the Yankees the 5-2 advantage. Yankee starter Brandon Weeden and reliever Josh Smith allowed just two hits a piece, with Jamestown's two runs charged to Weeden. The two pitchers combined to strike out 12 batters (Weeden five, Smith seven) in the win. Smith earned his first professional victory, evening his record to 1-1. The two teams will face off in game two of the series Saturday night. New York Yankee pitcher Jose Contreras will be making a rehab start in Staten Island. Game time is at 7:15 p.m.
