Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

Another day, another extra-inning, two out, walk-off win for the Palm Beach Cardinals.

Just three nights removed from hitting a 10th inning walk-off home run, Cardinals first baseman Xavier Scruggs crossed the plate on Jermaine Curtis's 11th inning base hit, giving Palm Beach a 6-5 win over the St. Lucie Mets.

In many respects, the game, which lasted nearly four hours, should not have needed such heroics. The Cardinals (4-5) put up 13 hits and drew 10 walks. But they also went just 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position, leaving an amazing 18 runners on base.

For a few moments, it looked like they would leave the bases full in the 11th as well. Scruggs led off the inning with a walk, got to second on a single by right fielder Alex Castellanos, and to third on center fielder Tommy Pham's base hit. After a strikeout earlier in the inning, the top of the order came to the plate with one out. No hitter in the Florida State League is hotter than short stop Jose Garcia, whose 3-for-7 night extended his hitting streak to 7 games and kept him atop the FSL batting leader board. But Garcia struck out, bringing up Curtis with two outs.

Curtis began the season on the disabled list, and went just 1-for-6 in his first two games back. But tonight he showed no signs of rust; his game-winning single was his fourth of the night.

The Cardinals look to extend their newly gained lead in the standings over the Mets (4-6) tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m, when they'll send probable starter Brian Broderick to the hill to face St. Lucie's Jeurys Familia.
