Cardinals Take Wednesday Win Over Daytona
August 31, 2022 - Florida State League (FSL)
Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
The Palm Beach Cardinals raced to the lead on Wednesday night against the Daytona Tortugas at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium and never looked back, on their way to a 6-3 win over their FSL East rivals.
Tink Hence tossed four scoreless innings, and logged six strikeouts while allowing just two baserunners. The No. 6 prospect in the St. Louis organization lowered his ERA to 1.49, while cementing a WHIP of .085 and a .171 batting average against. The Watson Chapel, Ark. native also clocked in 1-2-3 frames in both the first and second innings.
Fellow prospect Joshua Baez--ranked No. 11 in the organization per MLB Pipeline--opened the Cardinals' scoring with a homer to straightaway center field in the third. Palm Beach would make it 3-0 an inning later off RBI singles from Brody Moore and Jeremy Rivas.
The Tortugas would pull within a run in the sixth before the Cardinals cemented their lead in the seventh off a Thomas Francisco single and a Chris Rotondo bases-loaded walk. A triple from Victor Scott in the eighth gave the Beach Birds a three-run leading heading into the ninth, a margin which stood on Wednesday night.
Ljay Newsome entered the game in the fifth for the Cardinals and pitched a scoreless frame before surrendering the two sixth-inning earned runs. Newsome is listed as an MiLB rehab for Palm Beach, having pitched in MLB for Seattle in 2020 and '21. Roy Garcia inherited a pair of Newsome's runs but would escape the frame on a double play and was awarded the win, in part to his no-run seventh inning.
Ian Badell, also an MiLB rehab, earned a hold with a scoreless eighth out of the bullpen before Andrew Marrero claimed his ninth save in 2022 in the final inning.
With the win, the Cardinals maintain the FSL East second-half division lead over the St. Lucie Mets. With 10 games remaining in the season, Palm Beach's magic number is down to eight as they seek a postseason berth.
The Beach Birds are back in action Thursday night for Game 3 of the series.
