Cardinals' Rally Falls Short against Miracle
July 10, 2014 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals scored four runs in the final four innings but couldn't catch the Fort Myers Miracle, falling 5-4 on Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals took two of three games from Fort Myers in the series and went 6-2 on the homestand.
The Cardinals (14-6, 50-39) fell behind 4-0 after three innings, due in large part to back-to-back home runs from Fort Myers outfielders Adam Brett Walker and Travis Harrison in the second. The duo took two straight pitches from Palm Beach starter Kyle Helisek over the wall in left-center field to put Fort Myers on top 3-0.
Harrison went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run to lead the Miracle offensively.
Palm Beach mounted a valiant comeback effort late in the game. Ildemaro Vargas doubled down the left field line to lead off the sixth inning and Bruce Caldwell launched a deep home run to right field in the next at-bat to trim the Fort Myers lead in half, 4-2.
Caldwell has five long balls and 16 RBI over his last 10 games.
Down 5-2 in the eighth, the Cardinals put two more tallies on the board to come within one run. Nick Martini and Mason Katz traded doubles and Luke Voit scorched a pinch-hit RBI single to right-center to plate Katz and bring the score to 5-4.
Katz reached base safely in all four trips to the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a run, an RBI, a double, and two walks.
The Birds wouldn't come any closer as Tyler Jones came on in the ninth for Fort Myers and pitched a perfect inning to earn his 12th save of the year.
Palm Beach had multiple scoring chances in the game, leaving the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings. The team left eight men on base overall in the contest.
The one-run loss is the Cardinals' first by that margin at home this season (9-1).
Helisek (4-4) scattered seven hits over five innings, allowed four runs - three earned - in the start for Palm Beach. Kyle Barraclough and Danny Miranda Jr. each chipped in 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Dixon Llorens was charged with the Miracle's only other run.
Ethan Mildren (1-0) turned in 5.1 strong innings in his FSL debut for Fort Myers (11-8, 52-36). He gave up two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out three to pick up the win.
The Cardinals will hit the road for a four-game series with the Clearwater Threshers starting on Friday night. RH Tyrell Jenkins (3-1, 1.71) will start for Palm Beach against RH Kevin Walter (0-2, 5.31) for Clearwater. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
