Cardinals Overcome Slow Start to Clinch Series
June 24, 2022 - Florida State League (FSL)
Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
On the opening night of the 2nd half of the Florida State League season on Friday night, the Palm Beach Cardinals overcame a 3-0 hole in the first inning, hit two home runs and defeated the St. Lucie Mets 9-6 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Palm Beach clinches the six-game series, having won each of the opening four games this week over the first half winners. Dating back to the teams' previous series, the Cardinals have won six in a row over the Mets. And because each other game Friday was postponed in the league, the Beach Birds hold sole possession of first place in the 2nd half standings.
For the second night in a row, St. Lucie opened the game with multiple first inning runs. This time, the team from St. Lucie County scored three runs on four consecutive hits in the opening frame. Palm Beach did respond with a run from shortstop Jeremy Rivas on a passed ball in the home half of the inning. But a Cardinals' offensive onslaught commenced in the fifth inning, when a pair of RBIs from first baseman Brady Whalen and catcher Aaron McKeithan would put the home team within 4-3.
Leadoff hitter and center fielder Darlin Moquete would give the Cardinals its first lead with a three-run homer to left field in the sixth.
Not to be outdone, second baseman Sander Mora would follow with his own home run in the seventh, a two-run blast to left that gave Palm Beach breathing room late.
Starting pitcher Bryan Pope took a five-frame no-decision, striking out eight. Carlos Guarate earned the win out of the bullpen, with six strikeouts and no runs allowed until the final frame.
The teams are back in action Saturday night at 6:00 p.m., and it will be Kids Club Saturday at the ballpark!
