Springfield Cardinals News Release

Little Rock, AR - After a tough loss in which the Cardinals squandered away a 4-1 lead, Springfield look to get back on track in game two of the four-game series with the Arkansas Travelers Tuesday night.

The Cardinals sent righty Richard Castillo to the mound coming off his first loos of the season against fellow righty Mike Piazza making just his 3rd career start for the Travs.

For the second straight day, the Cardinals started the scoring in the second inning. After an error and a hit by pitch, Greg Garcia delivered a two-run double into right center field to put the Redbirds up 2-0.

Springfield added to their lead in the 3rd as Adam Melker singled, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI double by Oscar Taveras to lead 3-0.

The Travelers would finally get on the scoreboard in the 4th as Roberto Lopez singled and scored on an RBI triple by Ryan Mount. A batter later, Mount scored on an RBI groundout by Casey Haerther to cut the Cardinals' lead to just a run, 3-2.

Richard Castillo threw well for Springfield but left with one out in the 7th after hitting Carlos Ramirez and allowing him to steal second base. Jorge Rondon came in out of the bullpen and immediately fell behind Angel Castillo 3-1. Rondon pumped in a fastball that Castillo blasted to right center for a ground rule double scoring Ramirez and tying the game 3-3. Rondon would get the next two batters to end the inning.

In the 9th, Eric Fornataro entered the game and hit the first batter he saw. After a sacrifice and a ground out, Fornataro walked a batter to face lead-off man Jean Segura. With a 2-2 count, after narrowly missing on the previous pitch, Segura slapped a single up the middle to score the game winning run giving Arkansas its second straight come from behind victory, 4-3.

Springfield did not have a hit after the 4th inning.

Springfield will continue their four-game set with the Arkansas Travelers tomorrow night at 7:10pm. The Cardinals will send Carlos Martinez to the mound against Matt Oye of the Travs.

The Cardinals will not return home until Friday, June 29th after the All-Star break to host the Frisco RoughRiders in a three game series. Every Friday is a Fireworks Friday thanks to AM Pyrotechnics.
