Cardinals first-round pick Greene set to make debut with New Jersey

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that they have come to terms with their second 1st round draft choice shortstop, Tyler Greene from Georgia Tech. Greene, the 30th overall selection in the 2005 First Year Player Draft, is represented by agent Scott Boras. The Cardinals have assigned Greene to the New Jersey Cardinals of the NY-Penn League. He will report to the team on Friday. St. Louiss first selection with the 28th pick was outfielder Colby Rasmus.

This past season, Greene was named First-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference and was also named the 2005 ACC Tournament MVP. In addition, Tyler was a First-team All-America selection in 2005 by USA Today Sports Weekly and Collegiate Baseball. League wide, Tyler finished 2nd in the ACC rbis (72) and sbs (30), 3rd in runs (75) and hits (97), 5th in total bases (154), 8th in average (.373), slugging pct. (.592)and hrs (12), and 10th in on base pct. (464).

Other honors for Greene include First-team preseason All-America selection by Baseball America in 2005 and he was a member of the 2003 USA Baseball National Team that played in the Pan Am games. Greene made 184 starts at shortstop at Tech and ranks in the universitys top 10 for career stolen bases.

In previous seasons, six St. Louis Cardinals first-round draft picks have been assigned to the New Jersey Cardinals of the Class A NY-Penn League. The former first round selections that played for New Jersey are Bret Wagner (1994), Matt Morris (1995), Adam Kennedy (1997), Chance Caple (1999), Blake Williams (2000) and Justin Pope (2001).

The New Jersey Cardinals will travel to Brooklyn on Wednesday to finish the three game set. The teams will finish the suspended game from Monday at 6 pm, with the final game of the series immediately following. The Cardinals will return to Skylands Park on Friday July 1st to take on Staten Island. There will be a massive fireworks show following the game, sponsored by Condit World and The Star Ledger. Game time is scheduled for 7:15 pm.
