Springfield Cardinals News Release
Tulsa, OK - Having not seen a win in the last week, the Cardinals had an opportunity to reverse their fortune Saturday night against the Tulsa Drillers with lefty John Gast, owner of the 3rd best ERA in the league, on the mound against fellow lefty Edwar Cabrera, who ranks 6th in ERA, for Tulsa.
After a scoreless first inning, the Drillers plated the game's first runs on a two-run homer hit by right fielder Kent Matthes, his 3rd of the year, to grab a 2-0 lead after two innings.
In the 4th, Matthes delivered another solo homer to give the Drillers a 3-0 advantage.
John Gast would go just five innings in his start allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four. With a National League game and the pitchers hitting for themselves, he was pinch hit for in the 6th inning after throwing just 69 pitches.
Heading into the 7th, the Cardinals had just one hit, a double by Oscar Taveras in the 4th, against Edwar Cabrera. Taveras led off the frame by getting hit by a pitch and Kyle Conley followed with a single, but two strikeouts and a soft line out ended the threat. Cabrera lasted seven full innings and did not allow a run on just two hits. He struck out seven.
Springfield finally got on the scoreboard in the 8th against reliever Mike Marbry. Jake Shaffer started it with a one out double, Jose Garcia followed with a single and Kolten Wong delivered an RBI fielder's choice to score Shaffer making it 3-1. Oscar Taveras then singled and Kyle Conley singled to left center to score Wong to bring the Cardinals within a run. With runners on the corners and two out, Rainel Rosario struck out to end the inning stranding the tying run at third base. It was Rosario's fourth strike out of the game.
In the 9th, Niko Vasquez singled with two outs, but Greg Garcia was called out on strikes to end the game with Springfield short by a run, 3-2. The current eight game losing streak is the longest since 2009.
The Redbirds will continue their series with Tulsa tomorrow afternoon at 2:05pm. Springfield will send righty Trevor Rosenthal to the mound against Dan Houston of Tulsa.
The Cardinals will return home for an eight-game homestand Tuesday, May 1st against the NW Arkansas Naturals. Every Tuesday is a Great Southern Bank Dollar Dog Day featuring $1 hot dogs all game long. It's also Drury University's Red Cardinals T-Shirt Giveaway for 2,500 fans.
