Hill City Howlers News Release
Kris Watts ripped a pinch-hit RBI double that scored Jamie Romak and gave Lynchburg a 3-2 walk-off victory over Wilmington at City Stadium Tuesday night. The Cats will take on the Blue Rocks on Wednesday night at Calvin Falwell Field. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Lynchburg grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a Wilmington error. Eric Fryer reached on a throwing error by Blue Rocks shortstop Anthony Seratelli to begin the frame. Fryer advanced to second on a wild pitch from Wilmington starter Danny Duffy and reached third on a single by Romak. Eddie Prasch drove in Fryer with a sacrifice fly, which put the Cats in front 1-0.
Wilmington answered with a run of its own in the top of the fourth. Johnny Giavotella doubled to start the inning and reached third when Lynchburg shortstop Chase d'Arnaud committed a throwing error attempting to retire Mike Moustakas on an infield single. Hillcats starter Jeff Locke picked off Moustakas as he attempted to steal second, but Giavotella broke for home and scored the tying run.
The Blue Rocks snapped the 1-1 tie in the sixth. Giavotella drew a one-out walk from Locke and reached third when Moustakas laced a double to center field. Locke struck out Seratelli, but plunked Paulo Orlando to load the bases. Jamar Walton reached on a walk and Giavotella trotted home, which gave Wilmington a 2-1 advantage.
Lynchburg responded with a run in the bottom of the frame. Jose De Los Santos tripled to lead off the inning and raced home with the tying run when Zach Peterson uncorked a wild pitch that skipped away from Wilmington catcher Ryan Eigsti.
The game remained tied at 2-2 until the bottom of the ninth. Romak hit a one-out single for his third hit of the night and Prasch followed with a single to put Cats at first and second. Watts was inserted into the game as a pinch-hitter for Ciro Rosero and smacked a walk-off double to right field, which enabled Romak to score from second with the winning run.
R. J. Rodriguez (5-2) earned the win with a perfect inning in the top of the ninth. Wilmington's Juan Abreu (3-2) was charged with the loss. Both of Abreu's losses have occurred in walk-off fashion against the Hillcats as he surrendered a walk-off two-run homer to former Lynchburg third baseman Pedro Alvarez on May 15.
Wilmington and Lynchburg will meet in game two of a three-game series on Wednesday night at City Stadium. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
