New Jersey Cardinals News Release
The Oneonta Tigers (Detroit) defeated the New Jersey Cardinals 8-0 tonight at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey in the first of three games. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 12-13 and a game under .500, while the Tigers improved to 16-6. Cardinals starter Blake Hawksworth took the loss to fall to 0-1, while Tiger starter Matt OBrien improved to 2-0.
Oneonta jumped out to an early 1-0 in the first against Hawksworth, when first baseman Ryan Roberson singled back up the middle to score leadoff hitter William Rhymes. After Hawksworth left the game following the third inning, the Tigers jumped all over Cardinal reliever Kyle Sadlowski in the top of the fourth when they sent 9 men to the plate and scored 5 runs on 5 hits, including an RBI triple from Rhymes, who finished 4-5 with 3 runs scored and an RBI.
The Cardinals never threatened against OBrien as he cruised through 7 innings, scattering just 6 hits, 3 to second baseman Casey Rowlett. He struck out 4 and walked only 1.
The Cardinals and Tigers are scheduled to return to the field tomorrow, July 17, for the middle game of the three game series. Game time is set for 7:15, with Zack Zuercher (1-2, 2.55) expected to start for the Cardinals, while Burke Badenhop (1-1, 5.06) gets the nod for Oneonta. Newton Memorial Hospital and New Jersey Herald are sponsoring a Baseball bat giveaway for any child under 15 years of age.
