New Jersey Jackals News Release
On a special 11 a.m. start time at Yogi Berra Stadium, the Jackals dropped the first game of a five-game set with the Rockland Boulders 9-3.
Boulders' starter and Can-Am Strikeout King Pat Moran was the winning pitcher on a cloudy Wednesday morning in Little Falls. Moran went six-plus innings, surrendering only six hits and three runs. He struck out only one batter, a season low for the right-hander, but moves to 4-1 on the season.
Keith Brachold collected three more RBIs for Rockland. The Can-Am's leader in home runs and RBIs has 18 and 53, respectively. Fellow outfielder Chris Valencia also had a big day for the visiting squad, going 3-4 with three runs scored.
Jackals' starter Jon Kibler went five innings, allowing seven runs on ten hits. Kibler drops to 4-5.
Down early for the third straight game, the Jackals mounted a mini-comeback in the bottom of the first when Francisco Caraballo belted his tenth home run of the season. The two-run shot gave the Jackals their only lead of the game. Angel Berroa would add a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.
The loss snaps a two-game win-streak for the Jackals, and extends the Boulders' win-streak to five games. However, Newark Bears' Mike Ness no-hit the Quebec Capitales today, which keeps New Jersey only four games back of first place. The Boulders continue to climb the standings and are now seven-and-a-half games back of first place, three behind the Jackals.
Ness' no-hitter was the third in Can-Am history. He worked around six Bears errors en route to his sixth win of the season.
The five-game series will continue tomorrow at Yogi Berra Stadium. Lefty Craig Clark (3-3, 4.89) starts for the home side. Former major leaguer Gustavo Chacin (1-0, 0.00) opposes Clark. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m.
