West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
Even a couple of power outages couldn't short-circuit the red-hot West Michigan Whitecaps on their 12-game road trip. The Whitecaps built a 6-0 lead over the Kane County Cougars and then withstood a pair of power delays and a late Kane County rally to defeat the Cougars, 6-3, in Illinois on Tuesday. It was the fourth straight win for the Whitecaps and their sixth victory in their last seven games.
The Whitecaps utilized four singles, a sacrifice fly and a throwing error for three runs in the second and a 3-0 lead. A costly double error on the Kane County first baseman in the fifth allowed two more runs to score to make it a 5-0 lead.
Leading 6-0 in the sixth, the lights went out at Elfstrom Stadium for 15 minutes and then the same problem occurred in the seventh before the game could be completed. The Cougars rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth before reliever Ian Ostlund got the final out.
'Caps starter Jon Connolly continued his brilliant season by throwing six shutout innings and lowering his league-best earned run average to 0.83 in notching his sixth win without a loss. Victor Mendez and Jason Knoedler (ka-NAYD-ler) paced a 10-hit 'Caps attack with two hits apiece.
It's a quick turnaround the 'Caps and Cougars now as the two teams will meet again on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 Michigan time. Matt Pender (2-3) will start on the mound for West Michigan.
