BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The Fort Wayne Wizards scored an unearned run in the second inning — and that was all they needed to defeat the Battle Creek Yankees 1-0 Tuesday night in a Midwest League baseball game at C.O. Brown Stadium. Game 2 of the four-game series is set for noon Wednesday.

The Wizards got just three hits. A misplayed infield popup allowed Steve Baker to reach second base with one out in the second inning. With two outs, Luis Cruz laced an RBI single for the only run of the game.

The biggest outburst by either team came in the eighth inning when Fort Wayne centerfielder Kennard Jones was ejected. After striking out for the third time in four at-bats, Jones said something to home plate umpire Jason Dunn, who ejected Jones immediately. Jones then turned and argued — nose-to-nose and then some — with Dunn before being pulled away by his manager.

The Yankees got six hits — two by Matt Carson — but moved a runner to third base just twice in the game. Doubled plays ended threats in the sixth and seventh innings, and the Yankees went down 1-2-3 in the eighth and ninth.

Starter Anderson Garcia (1-2) was tagged with the loss. He allowed just two hits in six innings, walked six and struck out four. Jaime Saldaña and Josh Neitz finished up for the Yankees.
