Madison Capitols News Release
The Madison Capitols (23-21-2) are set to meet the Youngstown Phantoms (19-15-5-3) for the final two times of the regular season in this weekend's road series. A crucial weekend lays in front of the Caps with them holding a two-point lead on the Phantoms in the race for the playoffs. Madison currently sits at 4th place in the East with 48 points while the Phantoms are nipping at their heals in 5th, with 46 points.
The Capitols have won five of the seven meetings this season against Youngstown. The last series between the Caps and Phantoms ended in a sweep for the Capitols. On back-to-back nights, Madison ousted the Phantoms in overtime.
"The message doesn't change this weekend. We talk about winning every week and we talk about winning every game. Youngstown is a good team that we have seen a lot of this year and they play us hard," Capitols head coach Tommy Upton said. "There's a reason we keep a standings board in the locker room. It's so the boys can see how real the race for the post season is and so they can see what they need to do to get to where we want to be. But the message doesn't change. We have to play true our game and to our identity for 60 minutes both night's this weekend."
The Capitols have scored the second most goals in the USHL at 179. They have scored 46 more goals than Youngstown, having played only four more games than them. Madison is averaging 3.89 goals per game while the Phantoms average 3.17 GPG.
Offensively, the Capitols are led by blueliner Luke Mittelstadt. The Minnesota commit has scored 41 points while playing in all 46 games for the Caps during the 2021-22 campaign. Mittelstadt's 41 points currently ranks second among all USHL defensemen.
Between the pipes, Simon Latkoczy has racked up an 18-10-1 record so far this season. His 18 wins is tied for first in the East with Paxton Geisel.
The Caps and Phantoms skate to a pair of 7:05 p.m. ET puck drops both Friday and Saturday.
