Caps Kick Outlaws out of Town 11-5

July 27, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - Second baseman Matt Rogelstad was a home run away from hitting for the cycle and went 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Edmonton Capitals to a dominant 11-5 victory over the Chico Outlaws on Wednesday at TELUS Field.

The North American League game was originally supposed to be played on Tuesday night but had to be rescheduled to Wednesday because of unplayable field conditions as a result of Tuesday's rain accumulation. The delay didn't throw the Caps off at all, though, as they won the rubber match of the three-game series.

Rogelstad hit two singles, a double and a triple, drove in three runs and also scored twice to pace the Caps offence. Catcher J.D. Closser, who was just added to Edmonton's roster on Wednesday, made a solid debut with two hits, two RBI and one run scored, while centre fielder Steve Brown and right fielder Todd Linden also made big contributions with two runs and two hits each.

Caps starting pitcher Rory Shortell continued his impressive season on the mound, improving to 7-3 with the win on Wednesday, tossing five innings and scattering two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Tom Boleska, Chad Blackwell and Bartolome Fortunato pitched the final four innings to finish off the Outlaws.

The Caps improved to 32-25 on the NAL season with Wednesday's win, but they actually dropped a half game further back of the Calgary Vipers for first place in the North Division, since the Vipers swept their double-header against the Lake County Fielders on Wednesday to improve to 36-23. The Caps trail their provincial rivals by three games in the standings.

The Caps open a four-game home series against the Fielders on Thursday at 7 p.m. with another edition of Thirsty Thursdays presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House, 100.3 The Bear and 104.9 Virgin Radio, featuring $3 beer all game.

It's also Jersey Shore Night, as the Caps are celebrating the hugely popular MTV reality show, which debuts its fourth season the following Thursday. There will be hairstylists giving fans Pauly D blowouts or Snookie bumps, as well as more than $1,000 worth of GTL (gym, tan, laundry) prizes up for grabs. There will also be a live DJ performing on the concourse when doors open at 6 p.m., and fried pickles will be sold at the concession for one night only.

The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
