Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - For the second time in three seasons, the Edmonton Capitals won their annual B&B Demolition Home Run Hooky game in walk-off fashion, as they broke a tie in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Calgary Vipers 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at TELUS Field.

In 2009, it was Darryl Brinkley hitting a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to put the Caps past the Yuma Scorpions. And after the 2010 Home Run Hooky was rained out, the late-inning heroics continued in the 2011 edition, as shortstop Enrique Cruz scored on a wild pitch to give Edmonton the dramatic win over their provincial rival.

More than 4,100 fans filled TELUS Field for the 11 a.m. Home Run Hooky game, most of them students and their teachers from schools in Edmonton and surrounding communities. The game served as a field trip for the classes, as there were several educational components built around the action on the field. It was also the first K-97 Wiener Wednesday of the season, as hot dogs were just $2 all game.

Caps starting pitcher Daryl Arreola led the way for the home side with his arm and his bat, as he tossed six solid innings and surrendered three runs while striking out three Vipers. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in a pair of runs to help his cause.

Second baseman Alex Chavez went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Cruz had a pair of hits in addition to scoring the winning run. Catcher Lou Santangelo also had a good day at the plate with two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Caps pitcher Bartolome Fortunato will be used primarily as the team's closer to pick up saves, but he earned the victory on Wednesday by tossing a scoreless ninth inning, paving the way for the walk-off victory in the bottom half.

The Caps are now 3-1 on the young North American League season, having played all their games against the provincial rival Vipers (2-4). That trend continues on Thursday as the Alberta teams are back at it for a 7 p.m. game. It's the first Thirsty Thursday of the year, presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House, as beer is on sale for just $3.

The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
