Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals wrapped up their six-game home series against the Yuma Scorpions on Wednesday night and were looking to make it six wins in a row but ended up dropping an 11-3 lopsided decision to the visitors from Arizona.

After tallying an impressive 64 runs in their previous five games - all victories - the Caps got a taste of their own medicine when their offence came to a screeching halt on Wednesday night and only managed three runs on five hits throughout the game. Second baseman Enrique Cruz accounted for two RBI with a two-run home run in the third, but with only one other RBI on the night coming from centre fielder Steve Brown, it wasn't nearly enough offence to keep up with the Scorpions.

Lou Pote was the Caps' starting pitcher and struggled though four innings as he gave up nine runs on 10 hits which led to the Scorpions holding a commanding 9-2 lead through five innings. Relievers Mike Hrynio and J.J. Whetsel also saw some time on the mound and each gave up three hits, with Hrynio surrendering the other two runs of the evening in the seventh.

It was a solid performance by Yuma's starting pitcher James Garcia that proved the cause of the Caps' offensive woes, as he only surrendered six hits and three runs in eight innings pitched. On the offensive side of the game, it was Scorpions shortstop Jared McDonald who had the hot bat as he went an impressive 4-for-6 at the plate with a double and a whopping six RBI.

With the loss, the Caps' record falls to 47-29 on the North American League season, and they now sit 1.5 games back of the division-leading Calgary Vipers in the tight race for first place in the North. The Vipers beat the Chico Outlaws on Wednesday to extend their lead over the Caps to 1.5 games.

The Caps open up a brand new four-game home series against the Outlaws starting Thursday at 7 p.m. The series opener is another edition of Thirsty Thursdays presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House, 100.3 The Bear and 104.9 Virgin Radio, with beer on special for just $3. Friday's 7 p.m. game is Molson Trappers Night, which includes retro hats and uniforms that will be auctioned off after the game, as well as a free post-game concert by local folk rock band Captain Tractor.
