Madison Capitols News Release

Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols had one of their affiliate players receive a high honor as defenseman Griffin Mendel (Kelowna, B.C., Canada) was named to Hockey Canada's U-17 Hockey Challenge roster.

The 16-year-old Mendel, who currently skates in the British Columbia Hockey League for the Penticton Vees, attended Hockey Canada's development camp earlier this summer and received an invitation to the Hockey Challenge, which will take place from Oct. 30 to Nov. 7 in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, B.C.

The U-17 World Hockey Challenge has showcased many world class NCAA and NHL talents in recent years, including Madison native and University of Denver defenseman Will Butcher, reigning NHL Calder Trophy winner Aaron Ekblad of the Florida Panthers and 2015 top overall draft pick Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, among others.

The Capitols selected the 6-foot-2 Mendel in the ninth round of the 2015 USHL Draft (Phase I). The Kelowna native also heard his name called 11th overall by the Kootenay Ice in the WHL Bantam Draft in 2014.

The Capitols look to piggyback the momentum of a 10-goal weekend when they complete a span of five road games in their first six overall contests against the U.S. U17 National Team Development Program. Puck drop on Oct. 16-17 from Plymouth, Mich. is set for 6 p.m. CT each night. Coverage can be heard on 106.7 FM/1670 AM, The Zone.

Madison returns to the Alliant Energy Center on Oct. 23 for a three-game weekend set against the Chicago Steel & Bloomington Thunder. Tickets for each game are available by calling (608) 257-CAPS or visiting www.MadCapsHockey.com.
