Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
MADISON, WI-The Madison Capitols scored four goals in the third period and earned a 5-4 shootout win over the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Sunday afternoon at the Alliant Energy Center. Dubuque held leads of 3-0 and 4-1 in the third period, but the Capitols were able to tie the game with three goals in a span of less than two minutes. Charlie Gerard has the shootout-winning goal for the Capitols.
Dubuque appeared to be in control of the game when Willie Knierim scored 6:30 into the third period, deflecting a Hayden Shaw shot from the point to make it 3-0 Dubuque. After a Guillaume Leclerc goal for the Capitols to made it 3-1 at 8:05, Dubuque quickly responded to make it 4-1 as Evan Smith redirected a William Lagesson pass into the net at 9:30 to make it 4-1.
The Capitols would quickly turns the tides. Madison was awarded a five-on-three power play as Keegan Ford was assessed a hooking minor at 11:03 then Seamus Malone was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at 11:36. The Capitols wasted no time scoring as Luke McElhenie redirected a Haralds Egle pass over Dubuque goaltender Gavin Nieto's glove to make it 4-2 at 12:36. Daniel Willett would then score a power play a goal to pull the Capitols within one at 13:34 after Nieto left a rebound.
The Capitols would pull even with another tally at 12:34 as Cooper Watson scored an unassisted goal at 14:09. The defenseman got the puck at the blue line and snapped a shot that beat Nieto over the catching glove to make it 4-4.
The two teams remained scoreless through the third period and regulation and the game headed to a shootout. Egle opened the scoring for the Capitols but was equaled by Nathan Sucese in the third round for Dubuque. Charlie Gerard shot third for Madison and converted on his chance to win the game, firing a shot off Nieto's shoulder and into the net.
Dubuque opened the scoring at 1:58 of the second period on Brett Boeing's 27th goal of the season. Jacob Benson launched a bouncing up ice that was tracked down by Boeing at the Capitols blue line. Boeing raced in on a breakaway and beat Metcalf with a wrist shot over the blocker to make it 1-0 Dubuque.
Minutes later, Dubuque was awarded a major power play after a fight between Michal Kabac and the Fighting Saints Dylan Gambrell. The two scrapped at center ice, but the officials determined Kabac intentionally removed the helmet of Gambrell in the fight, which gave Dubuque five minutes of the power play.
Dubuque wasted little time making the Capitols pay on the man advantage as Seamus Malone scored his fourth goal of the weekend against the Capitols to make it 2-0. Malone, who notched a hat trick against the Capitols Friday night, scored a new career best 24th goal of the season with a wrist shot over Metcalf's blocker at 5:18.
Dubuque outshot the Capitols 52-40 in the losing effort. Dubuque's loss and Muskegon's win over Team USA U-18 on Sunday moved the Lumberjacks into sole possession of 3rd Place in the USHL's Eastern Conference standings. The Lumberjacks lead Dubuque by one point heading into the final four games of the regular season.
Dubuque returns to the Alliant Energy Center next Friday night for a rematch with the Capitols. Puck drop will be 7 p.m. and the game can be heard on Super Hits 106.1 FM. Dubuque's final home game is Fan Appreciation Night presented by American Trust on Friday, April 10 versus Tri-City.
