Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals moved one step closer to first place in the North American Baseball League's North Division standings. They began their 5-game regular season ending home stand Thursday night with a dominating 11-4 victory over the Calgary Vipers.

Both teams have already secured a spot in the North Championship series starting next Tuesday in Edmonton, but the division title and home-field advantage in the playoffs are yet to be determined as the teams still have four more games left to play against each other.

A strong offensive showing on the night by the Caps proved to be a team effort as an impressive five individual batters lit it up with two RBI's including a huge two-run home run in the second inning by third baseman Carlos Duncan to give the Caps the early 2-1 lead. There was no stopping the Capitals offense after that as they scored eleven total runs on an impressive fifteen hits and eventually walked away with the win.

The Caps pitching crew had an amazing night as well as starter Dallas Buck pitched seven innings in which he only gave up a total of two runs on five hits while tallying four strikeouts. Jorge Vasquez and Bartolome Fortunato split pitching duties in the last two innings. Vasquez had an impressive three strikeouts with one hit surrendered and Fortunato closed out the game with two runs on two hits, but managed two strikeouts of his own to finish off the Vipers.

With the win, the Caps improve their North American League record to 53-31. That's one more win than Calgary but the Vipers sit in first place in the standings with a slightly higher winning percentage having played less games due to rain outs early in the season.

The Caps continue with game two of their series against the Vipers on Friday night which will be another edition of Fireworks Friday presented by Joe FM with a spectacular post-game fireworks show that fans can enjoy right from their seats. It's also Military Appreciation Day featuring a special alternate jersey that the Caps will wear and auction off after the game to raise money for the Soldier On program. Fans are encouraged to get in their seats early to catch the special opening ceremonies.

The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Playoff tickets go on sale Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at all Ticketmaster outlets, at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
