Capitales Take Series with 9-3 Win
June 7, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Pitching Coach Ryan Bicondoa will take a long ride home from Quebec after Les Capitales jumped on him in the first two innings to go on and win 9-3.
Bicondoa only lasted three innings, giving up seven runs (although five of them were earned) before Michael Gedman relieved him in the fourth inning. Bicondoa was tagged with his second loss of the season.
On the flip side, Capitales starter John Mariotti picked his second win of the season, only giving up one run over seven innings and collecting eight strikeouts in the process.
The Capitales pounced on Bicondoa in the first frame of the game. Jonathan Malo and Sebastien Boucher had consecutive one-out hits. The very next batter, Rene Leveret, knocked in Malo, and Boucher advanced to third on a throwing error by centerfielder Jerod Edmondson. Boucher later scored on a Josue Peley single.
Nick Salotti was able to score on a Brandon Kelliher two-out single in the top of the second to make it a one-run game, but Les Capitales showed the Tornadoes that this was their house. Malo knocked in Josh Colafemina in the bottom of the second, and Boucher's Fielders Choice allowed Jeff Helps to make it a 4-1 lead over the Tornadoes.
Steve Brown then blew open the game for Les Capitales with a three-run home run, which scored Robert Wagner and Patrick DAoust. That caused Tornadoes manager Chip Plante to tell Bicondoa to leave his warm up jacket on for the rest of the game.
Michael Gedman was called upon for mop up duty and kept the score-sheet clean for most of his outing. He lasted four innings, striking out two Capitales, with his only blemish being a pitch that Ryan Wagner took over the wall for a solo shot in the seventh inning.
Meanwhile, Cameron Monger kept his on-base streak alive, extending it to 17 games after a walk in the top of the eighth inning off of reliever Maxim St. Pierre. Monger then scored after Edmondson bombed a St. Pierre pitch over the right field wall for a two run homer.
Wanting to save his bullpen arms, Chip Plante then turned to his usual shortstop Tony Patane to take the Tornados pitching staff the rest of the way. The only run Patane gave up during his one inning was another Colafemina run that scored after Boucher grounded into a 6-3 double play.
Capitales pitching coach T.J. Stanton closed the Tornadoes out in the ninth with a quick 1-2-3 inning. The Tornadoes are now 7-10 and at the bottom of the Can-Am standings, while Les Capitales sit second from the top with an 11-6 record.
