June 17, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Jackals rallied in the fifth inning to take the 4-3 lead, but the Quebec Capitales came back in the top of the ninth with six runs en route to the 9-6 victory. They win the weekend series two games to one.
Jonathan Malo, who hit the go-ahead solo homer in the 14th inning last night, started off the scoring for the Capitales with an RBI single in the third. In the fifth inning, Jeff Helps doubled in two to put the Capitales up 3-0.
Nick Giarraputo led off the bottom of that inning with a solo shot to left field, his Can-Am League-leading tenth home run of the season. With two outs and the bases empty, the Jackals would record singles on four straight pitches to score three more runs, taking a 4-3 lead from the Capitales.
But in the ninth, Steve Brown's leadoff home run off Jimmer Kennedy tied the score at four. The Capitales would add five more runs. Carlos Guzman's two-run homer in the ninth sealed the 9-6 final.
For the Capitales, starting pitcher John Mariotti went seven innings allowing the four fifth-inning runs off seven total hits. He got the no-decision. Maxim St. Pierre, former catcher for the Detroit Tigers, earns his first professional win, improving to 1-0 on the season.
After pitching seven innings last night in an extra-inning affair, the Jackals bullpen came on in the seven and eighth innings and held the Capitales scoreless. Jeff Gogal pitched the seventh and Jake Hale pitched the eighth. Jimmer Kennedy drops to 0-1 after allowing five ninth-inning runs.
Jackals starting pitcher Kyle Greenwalt persevered through six-and-a-third innings. He allowed three runs off nine hits, but the Capitales' ninth inning rally prevented him from earning a decision.
With the win, the Capitales maintain first place over the Jackals, now with a game-and-a-half advantage. The Jackals now head on the for a four-game series against the Newark Bears.. After that, they'll be home when the Grand Prairie Air Hogs come to town for a three-game set before the Capitales return to Little Falls for another three-game showdown.
Steve Fox (4-0, 2.27) takes the hill tomorrow for the Jackals. First pitch is set for 6:35pm.
