SAINT JOHN - Sacha Roy's shorthanded goal 7:01 into the third period proved to be the winner as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs, 3-1, Saturday at Harbour Station.

Drake Batherson also scored shorthanded for Cape Breton (2-0-0-0) while Egor Sokolov added an empty-netter.

Isiah Campbell had the lone goal for Saint John (0-2-0-0).

Campbell got the Sea Dogs on the board just over two minutes into the game.

Former Screaming Eagle Marcus Tesink took a pass near the top of the left circle and fed a slap-pass to Campbell in front of the net. The rookie winger stopped it with his skate, stepped to his left and tucked it under the sprawling Kevin Mandolese in the Cape Breton goal.

The Sea Dogs thought they had doubled their lead near the halfway mark of the period when a Tesink shot from the left point got past Mandolese's glove. But instant replay officials determined Saint John were offside at the start of the play and the goal was waived off.

The Screaming Eagles tied the score with a shorthanded goal with four minutes left in the period.

The puck was played into the Sea Dogs' zone to the right wing side of the net. Jordan Ty Fournier won a race with goalie Alex D'Orio to the loose puck and fed it in front of an open net. Batherson, making his season debut after returning to Cape Breton from training camp with the Ottawa Senators, rifled a quick wrist shot into the open cage.

The game remained tied until Roy potted the visitors' second shorthanded marker of the night in the third.

The second-year blueliner chased a loose puck up the right side of the Screaming Eagles' zone, poked it past the defender and broke away. Roy deked to his forehand and slid the puck inside the right post, under the glove of D'Orio.

Sokolov's first QMJHL goal was a long shot along the ice from the Cape Breton blueline into an open net in the Saint John zone. It came with 7.3 seconds remaining in the third period.

Mandolese made 28 saves for the victory in a third-star performance. D'Orio took second star in the loss with 31 stops.

Batherson's goal made him first star in front of 3,621 fans in attendance.

Saint John's next game is Thursday, September 28th, at 7 p.m. against the Charlottetown Islanders at Harbour Station. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station Box Office and online
