Cleveland Charge News Release
The Canton Charge began their third season in the NBA Development League with a 102-91 win on the road over the Erie BayHawks at the Erie Insurance Arena on Friday night. The Charge move to 1-0 and even the all-time series between the two teams at seven wins apiece, while Erie drops to 0-1 after the first of eight contests between the two teams this year.
The Charge pulled ahead for a 27-20 lead after the first quarter by limiting the BayHawks to just 6-of-22 shooting from the floor (27%) and winning the early battle on the glass, 17-9. Canton led by as many as 14 with 2:09 left in the period, but Erie forced defensive stops on the visitors' final four possessions while making a 7-0 run close it out.
Canton led by as many as 16 in the second thanks in part to creating extra opportunities with seven offensive rebounds and scoring nine second chance points. The Charge led the BayHawks 52-40 at the half after the home team locked down defensively for Canton's 8-of-23 shooting in the period. The Charge's 35 rebounds in the first half were good for a new team record, eclipsing their 31 boards in a game against Sioux Falls in their inaugural season (2/11/12).
Erie continued their strong defensive effort in the third quarter by limiting Canton to 5-of-14 shooting (36%), while posting an efficient offensive attack of their own by hitting 10-of-16 shots (63%). The BayHawks maximized their opportunities by creating high-percentage looks, netting 14 points in the paint in the third to Canton's two. The Charge's advantage was at 75-69 heading into the game's final period.
Canton forced five consecutive Erie misses and went on a 9-2 run to begin the fourth quarter, taking an 84-71 lead. The Charge maintained a double-digit advantage for all but 59 seconds of the game's remaining 8:49. The BayHawks were limited to 7-of-24 shooting (29%) in the game's final period, despite forcing 11 Canton turnovers that resulted in 11 points.
Kevin Jones paced Canton with a double-double of 15 points and 19 rebounds in 34 minutes. Jones posted eight double-doubles in 12 appearances for Canton during the 2012-13 season. Michael Lee provided a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds with four assists in 31 minutes off the bench. Rashad Anderson netted a team-high 19 points with 10 rebounds and two steals in 32 minutes. Shane Edwards added 18 points, nine boards and two blocks in 30 minutes. The Charge's 61 team rebounds in a game surpassed their franchise record of 57 set against Erie last year (11/30/12).
Six Erie players scored in double figures, led by Mustafa Shakur's 19 points with six assists and three rebounds in 37 minutes. Terrence Jennings added 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocks in 32 minutes. CJ Leslie scored 16 points and seven rebounds in 35 minutes. Ricky Davis netted 10 points with three rebounds and three steals in 32 minutes.
