Boston Cannons News Release

Boston, MA (June 11, 2006) - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced today that midfielder Matt Poskay has been selected as the MLL Cascade Rookie of the Week for his performance versus the Los Angeles Riptide this past weekend.

Playing in his first MLL contest since being drafted by the Cannons on May 31, Poskay made his presence known, scoring four goals in Boston's 20-13 victory over the expansion Riptide.

"Matt had an outstanding debut," said Cannons Coach Bill Daye. "It is very difficult to make the transition from college to the MLL. Matt handled his first game very well. We drafted him because he was a great finisher in college and we believe he will be in the pros. So far he has been."

The Cannons used their first pick in the 2006 MLL Collegiate Draft on Poskay, who was selected 12th overall. A graduate of the University of Virginia, Poskay's collegiate lacrosse career was capped by the Cavalier's 2006 National Championship victory.

In four years at UVA, Poskay scored 86 goals, 41 of which came during the Cavalier's recent undefeated season. He netted five goals in the national championship game.

Poskay scored the first goal of his MLL career in dramatic fashion. Scooping up the ball following a check, he made a great behind-the-back shot for the score as he fell to the ground. His goal put the Cannons up 8-6.

Poskay netted three more goals in the fourth quarter as Boston pulled away from Los Angeles. He also had 6 shots on goal.

Boston's next home game is Saturday, June 17, when the Cannons take on the expansion San Francisco Dragons at Nickerson Field. The game, which will begin at 7:00 PM, will be the first meeting between Boston and San Francisco.
