New England Riptide News Release

Lowell, Ma -July 7th- Two pitchers hooked up for the final game of the New England Riptide/Chinese Taipei series in Lowell tonight. Both pitchers, Eileen Canney for the Riptide and Chueh Ming Hui for Taipei, had won their previous outings in top form. It was Canney again as Ming Hui did not make it to the fourth and Canney one-hit the Chinese while striking out six to win the battle as the Riptide cruised to a 11-0 win. The fine performance gave Canney a total of 14 innings pitched in the series allowing only three hits, no runs and 15 strikeouts against one of the world's highest ranked teams. Canney picked up her seventh win of the year against five losses and increased her league leading strikeout total to 78.

The Riptide got on the board in the bottom of the second when Carmen Paez belted her second home run of the year, a monster shot well over the Sullivan Tire sign in right field. The Riptide got to Ming Hui again in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Both Shanel Scott and Carri Martin laid down perfect bunts and beat them out. That left Scott on third as she had stolen a base when Martin was at bat.

The Riptide put the game away in the fifth scoring four runs against Lai Sheng Jung who had relieved Ming Hui in the fourth. KJ Kelley led off with a great at bat that ended in a base on balls. Scott's sac attempt was not successful but four consecutive hits, an infield hit by Gina Carbonatto, a single by Lyndsey Angus and doubles by Jess Merchant and Carmen Paez drove in the runs. From there on it was just a matter of watching Canney as she continued to wreck the Chinese lineup striking out five in the first five innings. In the sixth LoYi Sha broke up Canney's bid for a no hitter with a sharp single to right but that would be it for the Chinese.

The Riptide continued to pour it on as Erica Beach led off the inning with her second home run of the year right where Paez's landed a few innings earlier. Four more runs capped off by a three RBI double by Paez made the final score 11-0. Paez ended the night 3 for 4 with 6 RBIs.

The Riptide head to Akron to play the Racers in a four game series beginning Wednesday. They return to Martin Softball Field for the home portion of the away/home series to play the Racers beginning on Wednesday July 16th and continuing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Chicago Bandits come to Lowell the following weekend.
