Charlotte Checkers News Release
RALEIGH, NC - Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has activated goaltender Cam Ward from injured reserve. The Hurricanes also reassigned forward Phil Di Giuseppe and goaltender Daniel Altshuller to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL) ahead of the NHL's All-Star Break.
Di Giuseppe, 22, made his NHL debut on Dec. 5 in the Hurricanes' game against Montreal, and has notched three goals and earned five assists (8 points) in 18 NHL games this season. The Maple, Ont., native has also totaled seven goals and nine assists (16 points) in 22 AHL games this season. The Hurricanes drafted Di Giuseppe (6'0", 200 lbs.) in the second round, 38th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft.
Altshuller, 21, served as backup to Eddie Lack for four games during his first NHL recall. The Ottawa, Ont., native has a 9-1-1 record with a 1.71 goals-against average, a .941 save percentage and one shutout in 11 games for Charlotte this season. Prior to joining the Checkers, he appeared in 14 games for the Florida Everblades of the ECHL, leading all ECHL netminders in goals-against average (1.58), save percentage (.941) and shutouts (3), while compiling a record of 10-3-0. Carolina's third-round selection, 69th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft, Altshuller (6'3", 205 lbs.) is in his second professional season after completing a three-year career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Oshawa.
