SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries (2-0) opened up the home portion of their 2016 schedule on Friday night, defeating the Sioux City Explorers (0-2) by the final score of 10-4 in front of 3,327 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Birds' found themselves trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the 3rd inning, before outfielder Ethan Chapman provided the spark to help jump-start the offensive attack. Chapman hit a line drive shot over the wall in right field for his first home run of the season, and his sixth of his career to make it a 2-1 ball game.
The Explorers would tag on a run in the top of the 4th on a Noah Perio Jr. home run to make it 3-1, before Canaries power-hitting designated hitter David Bergin and outfielder Cameron Monger went back-to-back with a pair of deep blasts over the left-center field wall to tie the game at 3-3. In all, the Canaries collected five round-trippers, with Chapman and Bergin each hitting two home runs in the win.
Starting pitcher Shawn Blackwell (1-0, 3.38 ERA) picked up right where he left off after his strong finish in 2015. The right-hander tossed eight strong innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out two batters. Blackwell did not walk a batter in the win on Friday night. Dating back to last season, the League City, TX native has walked just three batters over his last 42 2/3 innings, and has work into the eighth inning or later in six out of his last seven starts.
Relief pitcher, Kris Regas made his first appearance in a Canaries uniform since 2009 on Friday night. The lefty gave up one hit and a walk, but struck out one batter and did not allow a run in one inning of relief.
The four-game series continues on Saturday night at Sioux Falls Stadium, with RHP Madison Boer (0-0, 0.00 ERA) making his first start in a Canaries uniform. The Explorer's will turn to RHP Eddie Cody as they search for their first win of the season.
Come out to the Birdcage early on Saturday night for Cagey's Pre-Game Tailgate Party! The festivities begin at 4:00 PM, with gates opening at 5:00 PM. For more information about season tickets and corporate opportunities, call the Canaries ticket office at (605) 336-6060 or visitwww.sfcanaries.com.
