Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City, IA - The Sioux City Explorers bats weren't a factor in the 2016 season opener, falling to the Canaries 3-0 in nine innings at Mercy Field in Lewis and Clark Park.
The Explorers offense started off the 2016 campaign, with a quick, lead-off single by X's centerfielder Matty Johnson to begin the bottom of the first. Within a matter of minutes, Johnson had advanced into scoring position, with a stolen base but found himself stranded at second after three straight outs, ending the inning.
Sioux Falls kicked off the I-29 rivalry scoring first, plating three big runs in the second inning, off a bases clearing double by Canaries catcher Cameron Garfield, to take the early 3-0 lead.
Sioux City's Opening Night Starter and 2015 American Association ERA leader, Ryan Zimmerman, left the game early due to an injury in the second inning, forcing the X's to rely on their bullpen for the remainder of the game.
The Explorers relievers came through in the tough spot, not allowing a run for the remainder of the game. Right-hander Michael Pereslucha pitched in relief for the injured Zimmerman, going three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Lincoln, NE native Jacob Kuebler, pitched the final four innings for Sioux City, allowing no runs on four hits and four strikeouts.
Unfortunately, the X's bats stayed stagnant throughout the night, going scoreless while recording only four hits, losing by a score of 3-0 to the Canaries.
Left-hander Misael Siverio (1-0) got the win for Sioux Falls, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts while allowing only three hits. Explorers ace Ryan Zimmerman (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs before exiting the game with an injury in the second inning.
Sioux City will head to Sioux Falls to play game two of their four game series vs the Canaries, tomorrow night at "the Birdcage", first pitch - 7:05.
