Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries (25-38) continued their three-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones (34-25) on Thursday night in front of 2,816 fans, but for the second straight night found themselves a run short, losing by the final score of 10-9.
Canaries starting pitcher Tyler Pearson struggled with his command most of the night, walking a season high eight batters in five innings of work. The right-hander gave up his first runs of the night in the top of the third, after walking the first three batters of the inning. Kansas City capped off their four-run inning with a pair of hits, including a two-run double from Ernie Banks, Jr.
Sioux Falls responded in the bottom half of the inning, getting back-to-back singles from Brett Balkan and Chris Grayson before Jerome Pena walked to load the bases. David Bergin brought in everyone with a lazer-shot grand slam over the left-field wall to tie the game at 4-4.
The Birds took their first lead of the night in the bottom of the fifth inning, after Brian Humphries and Steve Sulkowski hitting a pair of two-run homeruns.
Kansas City took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning, after Pearson gave up a single, and allowed back-to-back walks to the first three batters of the inning. Mike Watt (1-1, 6.33 ERA) entered in relief, but immediately gave up a three-run double to Sergio Leon, who later scored the go-ahead run in the inning.
Pearson was charged with the game-tying run, but ultimately did not factor in the decision. In all, the right-hander allowed eight runs, on four hits, while walking a season high eight batters.
Watt suffered the loss after allowing one run on three hits in 2/3 of an inning.
Former Canaries closer, now Kansas City starter, Kris Regas (3-1, 5.03 ERA) picked up the win after allowing eight runs on nine hits over his five innings of work.
