Canaries Open Exhibition Season With Win

Mitchell, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries opened the exhibition season with a 7-1 win over the South Dakota Amateur All-Stars at Cadwell Park in Mitchell on Saturday night. The game saw dominant Canaries pitching retire the last 22 batters of the game, including 16 by way of strikeout.

The Canaries scored four runs right out of the gate. Alex Bardeguez and Tim Hutting reached on a pair of errors by the South Dakota Amateur All-Stars third baseman. Beau Torbert followed with a single to score Bardeguez, and Cory Harris doubled to bring in Hutting and Torbert. Harris later came in on a sacrifice fly by Ben Van Iderstine to put the Canaries up, 4-0 after a half inning.

The Amateur All-Stars got a run in the bottom of the second inning, but the Canaries matched that in the top of the third when Trevor Lawhorn doubled to score Van Iderstine. After two and a half innings, the Canaries still led by four, 5-1.

Harris added another RBI in the sixth when he brought in Hutting on a groundout. Harris went 2-for-5 with three RBI in the game. The Canaries, who had three hit games from Torbert and Lawhorn, added a final run in the seventh when Fraser Holmes brought in Lawhorn on a sacrifice fly for the 7-1 final.

Ryan Ford started the game, and pitched two innings. Ford allowed one run on three hits and two walks. Ben Moore (pictured) relieved Ford and started a string of dominance on the mound for the Canaries. Moore pitched two perfect innings and striking out five of six batters faced. Chris Weast continued the roll striking out two in a perfect inning. The strikeouts continued as Shaun Corning sat the side down on strikes in the sixth inning. While Ryan Grant only struck out one in a perfect seventh inning, Patrick Lawler struck out the side in the eighth inning. Tony O'Donnell finished off the game by striking out two of three in a perfect ninth inning.

The Canaries will host the University of Sioux Falls in an exhibition game at Sioux Falls Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
