Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Sioux Falls Canaries (9-9) offense soared their way to an 8-2 victory over the Grand Prairie AirHogs (4-13) at Sioux Falls Stadium on Monday night. The Birds' put up three runs in the fourth inning, and five more in the sixth on the way to their first win of the weeklong home stand
The Canaries trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, before leadoff batter David Bergin reached base after being hit by a pitch. Richard Stock drove him in a batter later on a two-run homerun over the right field wall. The blast was Stock's second of the season, and extended his season long hitting streak to ten games. Brian Humphries added to the big three-run inning with his first homerun of the year on a moon shot over the right-field wall.
Humphries erased an 0-for-20 slump with a 3-for- 4 night at the plate.
The Birds' opened the flood gates in the sixth, adding five more runs, highlighted by a David Bergin RBI double, and a two run single from Jerome Pena.
Pena continues to swing a hot bat for the Canaries, going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. The shortstop has recorded six hits in his last five games, going 6-for-20 (.300) with a double, a triple, and two RBI.
Starting pitcher Miguel Pena (3-1, 2.30 ERA) threw six innings for the Birds', allowing two runs on seven hits to earn his third victory of the season.
Grand Prairie's starting pitcher, Blake Oliver (1-2, 7.80) suffered the loss in a spot start for the AirHogs.
The Birds' are back in action on Tuesday night in game two, of this three game series. Shawn Blackwell (1-2, 2.12 ERA) takes the mound for Sioux Falls in his fourth start of the season.
