Canaries Come Up Short

St. Joseph, MO - The Sioux Falls Canaries (9-12) suffered their third consecutive loss, falling 4-3 against the St. Joe Blacksnakes (8-13) on Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium.

The Blacksnakes took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Terry Robles walked and Casey Gordon doubled to advance him to third. With two runners in scoring position, Dylan Parzyk came through with a two-out single to bring both Robles and Gordon home. The pair of runs put the Blacksnakes on the scoreboard with a 2-0 lead.

The Canaries tied the game in the top of the fifth. Ben Van Iderstine singled and went around to third on a single by Juan Figueroa. With two outs, Jake Smith singled through the left side to score Van Iderstine and advance Figueroa to second. Orlando Miller came to the plate with the Canaries down, 2-1, and tied the game by driving home Figueroa with a single to left field. After four and a half innings, the game was knotted, 2-2.

The Blacksnakes bounced right back to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Robles doubled and scored on a single by Andy Wilson to give St. Joe a 3-2 lead. Wilson advanced to second on the throw home and came in to score when Parzyk came through with his second RBI single of the night. The Snakes took a 4-2 lead after five innings.

The Birds got one back in the seventh inning. James Shanks led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a flyout to right field by Jake Smith. Shanks came in to score on a triple by Miller. Cameron Coughlan followed with a flyout to right field. Miller tried to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate, leaving the Canaries a run short in the 4-3 loss.

Ryan Ford (4-4) took the loss for the Canaries. Ford pitched seven innings giving up four runs on five hits, walking two, and striking out seven. Rick DeHart (1-2) picked up the win for St. Joe, and Caleb Balbuena saved his third game of the season.

The Canaries and Blacksnakes will continue their weekend series on Saturday night with a 7:05 game at Phil Welch Stadium. The Birds return home to host the Sioux City Explorers on Monday evening. Monday will be the Canaries "Used Car Giveaway" presented by Nordstrom's Auto.
