Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release
Fargo, ND - The Sioux Falls Canaries fell to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for the second-straight night, blowing a 5-2 fourth inning lead and falling 7-5.
For the second-straight game against the RedHawks, the Birds built an early lead over the first three innings, taking a 5-2 lead into the fourth.
Burt Reynolds took advantage of two RedHawk errors in the top of the first, singling home Jabari Henry and Dan Motl to give the Canaries a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Tyler Wolfe launched a solo home run in his first at-bat in a Canary uniform, and just two batters later, Chris Jacobs hit a solo homer to extend Sioux Falls' lead to 4-0.
Jacobs' home run, his 17th of the season, moved Jacobs back into a tie atop the American Association home run leaderboard alongside Kansas City T-Bones 1B Kevin Keyes.
And after Charlie Valerio cut the Birds' lead in half with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second against Bryce Morrow, Sioux Falls tacked on one more on Brett Marr's single, scoring Wolfe from first.
But once again, the RedHawks battled back, tying things up against Morrow in the bottom of the fourth, and taking the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Eight batters reached base in the bottom of the fourth against Morrow as the Canaries starter allowed three runs on three hits, an error and a walk to tie the game at five.
And then in the sixth, Devan Ahart's one-out double scored Yhoxian Media from first, giving the RedHawks the lead.
Morrow allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits over 6.0 innings pitched, walking and striking out three.
Andrew Woeck relieved Morrow in the seventh and worked two innings against the RedHawks, but did allow a run on K.D. Kang's sacrifice fly, helping Fargo extend their lead to 7-5.
And Jose Almarate, along with Fargo-Moorhead's bullpen, shut the Birds down over the final six frames, stranding nine runners on base, including five at third.
Morrow takes the loss for the Birds, falling to 1-5 on the season, while the Canaries fall to 31-37 on the year. Almarante picks up the win, and Weathers the save, for the RedHawks, who move to 37-29 on the season.
The Canaries wrap up their three-game set in Fargo on Tuesday against the RedHawks. RHP Grady Wood (5-2, 2.70 ERA) will take the hill against the RedHawks in game two of the three game set, facing LHP Tyler Alexander (3-5, 2.85 ERA) with first pitch at 7:02 PM.
Following their three-game set in Fargo, the Birds return home for a seven-game homestand, starting with four games against the Texas AirHogs, August 3-6.
Be sure to save the date as well for the Birds' three-game home stand against the Salina Stockade August 18-20, as Sunday's matchup has been moved from a 12:05 PM to a 4:05 PM start.
