SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Tuesday morning that the organization has acquired outfielder Ty Morrison from the Laredo Lemurs in exchange for left-handed pitcher Billy Waltrip.

Morrison, 26, appeared in 148 games for Laredo over parts of the last two seasons, posting a .307 batting average to go along with 179 hits and 50 RBI. The speedy outfielder helped guide the Lemurs to the 2015 American Association championship after batting .350 with a double and five RBI in post-season play.

"We believe Ty is going to be a game changer in the middle of our lineup," said Canaries Field Manager Mike Meyer, "He's a plus runner with surprising pop and he's a tireless worker with a high baseball IQ."

Morrison was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 4th round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft. He spent parts of seven seasons in the Rays minor league system, batting .262 with 106 extra-base hits and 151 RBI. Baseball America tabbed Morrison as the #13 Prospect in the Rays farm system in 2010 and rated him as the systems "Best Athlete" after the 2011 season.

"I was fortunate to have Ty in the lineup for two seasons down Laredo," added Meyer. "He has a terrific baseball background, and we feel that he is only going to get better. He's definitely going to bring some excitement to the Birdcage this season."

Laredo receives LHP Billy Waltrip, who finished the 2016 season with a 3-1 record and 3.69 ERA in 34 relief appearances. The hard throwing left-hander racked up 51 strikeouts while walking 29 batters over 39 innings with the Canaries.

The southpaw missed the entire 2015 season due to injury, but returned to the baseball scene in 2016 with the Pecos League's White Sands Pupfish. Waltrip dominated Pecos League opponents, going 3-0 with a 1.99 ERA while racking up 41 strikeouts in just 22 2/3 innings of work. He enters the 2017 season with 147 strikeouts to go along with his 3-1 record and 3.69 ERA.

The Sioux Falls Canaries enter their 25th season on May 18th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park. The home portion of the 2017 schedule opens up on Saturday, May 20th at the Birdcage.
