SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Wednesday afternoon that the team has traded left-handed pitcher Miguel Pena to the Laredo Lemurs for infielder Frank Martinez.

The 30-year-old Martinez wrapped up his 11th professional season in 2015, appearing in 94 games for the Frontier League's Southern Illinois Miners. The switch-hitting second baseman was named an All-Star for the Miners after posting a .271 batting average and 21 extra-base hits. Martinez had a patient eye at the plate, leading his team with 57 walks.

Martinez originally signed with the Oakland Athletics in 2003 as an undrafted free agent, hitting .256 in six minor league seasons. He joined the independent ranks in 2011, playing for Normal Cornbelters, Evansville Otters, and Southern Illinois Miners. He hit .286 over the last five seasons with his best coming in 2014, hitting .317 with nine home runs and 20 doubles in 80 games.

Pena joins the 2015 American Association Champion, Laredo Lemurs after finishing his first American Association season with a 6-7 record and 3.58 ERA in 18 starts for the Canaries.
