(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - Canadians RHP Jose Espada put together a masterful six innings of work while McGregory Contreras hit his team-leading 7th home run of the season as Vancouver topped Eugene 5-1 to open a five-game series out at sun soaked Scotiabank Field on Friday evening.

The Canadians wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Eugene starter Jose Albertos couldn't escape the bottom of the 1st inning with nine Vancouver hitters producing four runs. The big blow was a two-run single from Yorman Rodriguez that scored both Tanner Kirwer and Griffin Conine.

McGregory Contreras' 7th home run came in the bottom of the 3rd inning off Emeralds reliever Eugenio Palma that helped the Canadians to a 5-0 lead. Eugene's only run of the game came in the top of the 8th when Fernando Kelly doubled home Luis Diaz off reliever Will McAffer. Connor Law came in to pitch the final 1 2/3 innings allowing just one hit to secure the victory.

With the win, Vancouver improves to 2-2 (.500) on the second half of the season, and 21-21 (.500) overall. With both Spokane and Everett losing on Friday, the Canadians move into a second-place tie with Everett, just a lone game behind Spokane (3-1).

Note: The Canadians added RHP Troy Miller to the roster this afternoon. The right-hander signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the University of Michigan and was in the dugout on Friday night.

Vancouver will send LHP Randy Pondler (1-4, 4.39) to the mound opposite LHP Brailyn Marquez (1-2, 2.36) with the first pitch from sold out Scotiabank Field set for Saturday, July 28th at 7:05pm. The game can be heard live at www.canadiansbaseball.com.
