Canadians Bring Out Bats And Broom Vs Salem

August 2, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release

(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - Canadians DH Art Charles proved to be one of the big bats in the Vancouver lineup as his three runs batted in paced the C's to an 11-4 victory over Salem-Keizer on Thursday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep over the Volcanoes.

Charles, a native of Bakersfield, CA, drove in the tie-breaking run in the bottom of the 5th inning on an RBI groundout to second base scoring LF Matt Newman, giving the C's a 5-4 advantage they would not relinquish. The Canadians never looked back after that, adding six more runs the rest of the way to turn the contest into a rout.

The C's also capitalized on a pair of errors by Volcanoes reliever RHP Steven Okert, who had trouble making a couple of routine plays at first base. 1B Balbino Fuenmayor scored on Okert's first error in the bottom of the 5th inning to give the C's a 6-4 lead, before the right-hander's second error an inning later led to two more Vancouver runs.

Fuenmayor finished the afternoon with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while SS Jorge Flores added two RBIs and three runs scored. The C's managed a total of 12 hits on the afternoon, with eight players collecting at least one hit.

On the mound, RHP Nick Purdy was spectacular in tossing three shutout innings in relief of starter RHP Roberto Osuna (3.0 IP), who was making his home debut at Scotiabank Field. Purdy (2-1) allowed only two hits over his three innings of work to pick up his second victory of the season while lowing his ERA to 2.28.

RHP Bryan Longpre (2.0 IP) and RHP Jon Lucas (1.0 IP) didn't allow a run over the final three innings, combining to allow just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.
