Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Gesa Stadium - Pasco, WA) - Vancouver's offense came storming out of the gates on Tuesday evening with three runs in the top of the 1st inning off RHP Henry Henry. The trio of runs would be the only ones Vancouver could manage until Brett Wright hit a two-run home run in the top of the 9th to seal up a 5-2 win over Tri-City out at Gesa Stadium.
A night after getting drubbed 10-2 by the Dust Devils, Vancouver set the tone early with SS Otto Lopez (single), CF Tanner Kirwer (RBI triple) and DH Chris Bec (RBI single) helping the Canadians open up an early three-run lead. Bec would score on a balk as base umpire Mitch Leikam caught RHP Henry Henry rushing his delivery helping round out the top of the1st inning surge from the C's offense.
Tri-City CF Grant Little would manage a double in the bottom of the 1st and later score on an RBI single from SS Tucupita Marcano bringing the Dust Devils within a pair of runs as Canadians starter RHP Sean Wymer allowed just this lone run over his three innings of work.
Vancouver reliever RHP Joey Murray had his up's and down's over his two innings of work pitching a clean bottom of the 4th before loading the bases without recording an out in the bottom of the 5th giving Tri-City a chance to erase the two-run cushion that the Canadians had enjoyed since the 1st inning. However, Murray buckled down and outside of a sacrifice fly off the bat of LF Tyler Benson that scored C Blake Hunt who led off the frame with a walk, the Canadians escaped with the lead at 3-2.
It would remain a one-run game until the top of the 9th inning before the Canadians offense struck again, as Tri-City reliever RHP Wen-Hua Sung gave up a leadoff double to 2B Nick Podkul and two batters later left a 3-1 fastball out over the heart of the plate where Vancouver C Brett Wright crushed it over the left field fence, right down the line to give the C's a 5-2 lead. Note: Brett Wright is 9-for-63 (.143) this season with a double and five home runs.
Five pitchers combined on the victory for Vancouver as RHP Sean Wymer (3IP, 2H 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 3SO), RHP Joey Murray (2IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 2SO), RHP Justin Watts (2.0IP, 0H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 3SO), LHP Marcus Reyes (1.0IP, 0H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 0SO) and RHP Orlando Pascual(1.0IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 0SO) combined for the Canadians 16th victory of the second half (16-10) and 35th overall (35-29).
The win improves the Canadians to 5-6 (.455) on the season vs. Tri-City with only Wednesday's series finale remaining of the 12 head-to-head meetings between these two North Division rivals. Vancouver will send LHP Nick Allgeyer (0-1, 2.78) to the mound opposite 19-year old RHP Sam Keating (3-6, 5.63) in the rubber match of this three-game road series. Note: Vancouver's Tuesday night victory snapped the Dust Devils four game winning streak dating back to August 17th vs. Everett.
