Can-Am League names players of the week

Published on August 15, 2005 under Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

SportsTicker, the Can-Am League's official statistician, has chosen New Haven County DH Jeff Brooks and Elmira LHP Rolando Viera as Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week of August 8-14.

Brooks went 12-for-20 with three home runs and twelve RBI as the Cutters maintained their South Division lead with a 5-1 week. Saturday, the Mountain City, Tenn., native went 3-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBI as New Haven County whipped Elmira 14-5. Brooks is ninth in the Can-Am League with a .329 average to go along with twenty doubles, eight home runs and 53 RBI.

The 25-year-old is in his ninth season of professional baseball after being drafted in the third round by Arizona in 1997. He spent six years in affiliated ball in the Diamondbacks' and Padres' systems before moving to St. Paul and Gary of the Northern League in 2003. Last season, Brooks played for New Haven County and the Bangor Lumberjacks, hitting .315 with five home runs and 29 RBI in 35 games for the two clubs.

The first Pioneer to be selected as a Player of the Week this season, Viera had two splendid starts on the week. Monday, he shut down the powerful New Jersey offense, giving up no runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work for his second win of the season as Elmira won 10-1. Sunday, the Havana, Cuba, native pitched eight innings, giving up two unearned runs and striking out six, but was saddled with the tough-luck loss as the Pioneers fell to New Haven County 2-1. Currently, Viera is 2-1 with a miniscule 0.39 ERA in three starts for the Pioneers.

A seventh-round draft pick of Boston in the 2001 draft, Viera spent two seasons in the Red Sox organization, reaching as high as AAA Pawtucket in 2002, before playing the last two years with Newark of the Atlantic League. He also spent part of this season with Tabasco of the Mexican League, going 0-1 in six outings.
