New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ A strange top of the first saw the Elmira Pioneers jump out to an early 1-0 lead, the product of a fielding error, a catcher's interference, a hit batter and a broken bat single. After escaping that bases-loaded jam with only one run allowed, Jackals starter Josh Brey decided enough was enough.

Brey retired the next 17 batters he faced and the Jackals won a crucial game at Yogi Berra Stadium 4-1 as they head down the homestretch.

The Jackals finally kickstarted their offense in the bottom of the fourth, as Matt Hagen knocked in Chris Rowan with a clutch, two-out single to tie the game.

Designated hitter Mike Rucci led of the bottom of the fifth with a single through the left side, and advanced to second and then third on a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch. Ricardo Cordova hit a go-ahead RBI single in the next at-bat and the Jackals never looked back.

Brey put together a gutsy effort after his rocky start, going six innings while allowing only two hits and an unearned run. A depleted Jackals bullpen was fantastic, with Fabricio Benitez, Horace Lawrence and Isaac Pavlik each giving an inning.

Rucci led the way at the plate for New Jersey, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, including a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to provide an extra cushion.

Amauri Casana was 2-for-4 with the lone RBI for Elmira. Starter Brian Ford went seven innings, allowing four runs, three of them earned while striking out five.

The Jackals continue their series tomorrow against Elmira at 7:05 p.m. For tickets and other information, please call the Jackals Ticket Office at 973-746-7434 or visit www.jackals.com.
