Sussex County 6, Rockland 3
Sussex County opened up defense of their 2018 championship in a good way as they defeated Rockland by the score of 6-3. The Miners, with help from the long ball, jumped out to a 4-2 lead after three innings of play and would cruise from there to notch their first win of the season.
Nick Zaharion led the way offensively for Sussex County as he went 1-for-4 with a second inning home run and two RBI while Jarred Mederos contributed a first inning solo blast in a 1-for-4 effort. Audy Ciriaco also added two hits in five at-bats along with a run and RBI for the Miners.
Starting pitcher Cory Jones allowed two earned runs over six innings of work and collected the win for Sussex County. Jones gave up three hits and three walks while striking out four in 96 pitches. Ryan Nowell closed the door on the Boulders in the ninth for his first save of the season.
For Rockland in the losing effort, Collin Ferguson had a 1-for-3 game with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI.
