OHL Saginaw Spirit

Camp Update: McFarland & Trocheck

August 29, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Saginaw Spirit News Release

Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon seems to be a believer in building the nucleus of an NHL team on draft day. His work in assembling young up and coming talents through the selection process certainly helped pave the way for the Chicago Blackhawks to raise their first Stanley Cup banner in decades a couple of years ago. Now he is using that formula to get the Panthers back into the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. In the last two seasons, the Panthers have stockpiled numerous high end selections that should form the foundation for years to come, and two of those players will be looking to earn an OHL Championship with the Saginaw Spirit before they call the Sunshine State home. Both John McFarland and Vince Trocheck attended the Panthers Development Camp this summer leading into the team's main camp and for Trocheck it was his first taste of the NHL environment since Florida tabbed him as their third round pick back in June. "It was an eye opening experience, the Pittsburgh native noted as he looked back to the camp. The competition was extreme and it was perfectly run which is what I expected from an NHL team." Trocheck was also pleased his Spirit teammate McFarland, who was taken in the second round in 2010, was there from a comrodery standpoint. "It was great to have Mac with me down in Florida, we hung out together, had some time to head to the beach, and we played together on the same team in the scrimmages." McFarland also enjoyed having a familiar face in Trocheck as part of the process and having attended his second such camp there was more familiarity for the former number one pick in the OHL. "Without question it was a more comfortable situation for me, McFarland pointed out, I just had a better feel for the situation." Both Trocheck and McFarland were also able to have an opportunity to meet the Panthers new Head Coach in long time forward Kevin Dineen who will be at the helm of an NHL team for the first time after several successful years at the AHL level. "You have to take his experience to heart" McFarland recollects as both he and Trocheck gear up for the start of the OHL season and prepare for hockey life after Saginaw as teammates at the pro level.
