Cammarata Named Rookie of the Year

Waterloo, Iowa-Having the first selection during the 2011 United States Hockey League Futures Draft last May worked out better than anyone in the Waterloo Black Hawks organization could have hoped, culminating with the USHL's announcement Thursday that Taylor Cammarata has been chosen as the league's Rookie of the Year.

Following a stellar prep career at Shattuck-St. Mary's in Minnesota, Cammarata did not encounter many difficulties adjusting to Tier I junior hockey after the Hawks drafted him. Playing in all 60 games, the now-17-year-old led Waterloo with 27 goals, 42 assists, and 69 points. Cammarata's efforts made him the sixth-leading scorer overall in the USHL. He also led the Black Hawks in power play points (19), first goals (eight), and shooting percentage (21.1%). Cammarata's point total is the most by a Waterloo rookie since Joe Pavelski reached the same mark in 2002-2003.

"The offensive instincts Taylor has shown are incomparable for a player of his age," said Black Hawks head coach P.K. O'Handley. "He has been able to have success with every linemate he has been paired with during this season."

Cammarata and Pavelski are the only Black Hawks who have ever been recognized with the USHL Rookie of the Year award since it was established at the conclusion of the 1996-1997 season. In November, Cammarata committed to the University of Minnesota for the 2013-2014 season. Two months later, he appeared during the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Muskegon, Michigan. His teammates selected him as not only the Black Hawks Rookie of the Year, but also the team's Most Valuable Player at the conclusion of the regular season.

The forward's success has continued into the postseason, where he leads Waterloo with seven goals and twelve points. Cammarata's ability to find the net already ties him for ninth in career playoff goal-scoring during the Black Hawks' modern era. His seven-game postseason point streak, which ended Sunday, is tied for the longest in the USHL during these Clark Cup playoffs.

Cammarata and the Black Hawks continue their Championship series against the Green Bay Gamblers with Game Three Friday. Game Four will be played Saturday evening, also at Young Arena. The best-of-five series is currently tied at one game apiece.
