Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-With six points accumulated during three Waterloo Black Hawks games, the United States Hockey League named forward Taylor Cammarata the league's CCM Offensive Player of the Week Monday.
Recording two goals and an assist against Team USA last Tuesday, Cammarata celebrated his first three-point night in the USHL during an 8-4 victory. The Hawks won by the same score on Thursday versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders as Cammarata added a goal and an assist during a four-goal first period. Although the RoughRiders claimed the rematch 3-2 Saturday, the University of Minnesota recruit notched a late power play assist and nearly tied the score in the closing seconds, clanking a shot off the post. Playing in all 17 Hawks games, Cammarata leads the team in goals (eleven), assists (eleven), points (22), and ranks second in plus-minus (+7). His 22 points rank third overall in the USHL.
The 16-year-old was the first overall pick during the 2011 USHL Futures Draft. Prior to his arrival in Waterloo, Cammarata played for Shattuck-St. Mary's.
"We had no doubt about Taylor's skills, but what has really impressed our staff - and I think our fans - is his effort," said Waterloo Black Hawks head coach P.K. O'Handley. "He wants to make himself better and that shows a lot of maturity for a player at his age with his abilities."
Cammarata joins teammate Mitch Witek as the only Black Hawks who have claimed a USHL weekly award this season. Witek was chosen as the league's Defensive Player of the Week last Monday.
After the Hawks' five-game winning streak ended last Saturday on the road, Waterloo returns to Young Arena for two weekend games. Friday the Hawks host Team USA, before the Omaha Lancers visit Saturday. Both games begin at 7:05. In addition to College Weekend tickets presented by iWireless both nights, the first 1,000 fans in attendance Friday will receive the next installment if iWireless player cards. Saturday, the first 1,000 will take home a Waterloo Black Hawks key chain.
