Cam Weaver brace powers Dynamo Reserves past FC Dallas Reserves Houston comes back from two-goal deficit to sweep First Team / Reserve League doubleheader
The Houston Dynamo Reserves (4-1-1) came back from a two-goal deficit to defeat the FC Dallas Reserves (2-3-1) 3-2 Saturday night at BBVA Compass Stadium. Cam Weaver recorded a brace including the game-winner in stoppage time to give the Dynamo the victory in the night-cap of the First Team / Reserve League doubleheader.
The Dynamo nearly struck first in the 12th minute off a through-ball from Brian Ownby. The University of Virginia product slotted the ball between two defenders to a streaking Macoumba Kandji. The Dynamo striker took a touch around goalkeeper Chris Seitz, but a Dallas defender blocked his shot on goal.
Dallas came back minutes later and nearly got a goal from Moises Hernandez. The homegrown defender picked up a loose ball from 30 yards out and sent in a shot that was heading toward the upper corner of the net. Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric dove to his left to make the save and keep the game scoreless. Deric made five saves on the night.
The game did not remain scoreless for long, however. In the 31st minute, Hernandez played a long ball over the top of the Dynamo defense to Kellyn Acosta. The FC Dallas Academy and U-17 USMNT defender took a touch on the ball and fired it under the crossbar past a helpless Deric.
FC Dallas doubled its lead in the 49th minute when Andrew Weideman slotted the ball home past Deric.
The Dynamo offense remained stagnant for much of the match, but came alive in the 71st minute when midfielder Josue Soto found Weaver inside the Dallas 18-yard box. The 6-foot-4 striker controlled the ball and hammered it past second-half sub Richard Sanchez to put Houston on the board.
Minutes later, midfielder Warren Creavalle won a tackle and played the ball in behind the Dallas defense to fellow rookie Colin Rolfe who beat Sanchez to tie the match.
Dallas stormed back in the 81st minute, but Deric stopped homegrown forward Jonathan Top on a breakaway to keep the game tied at two.
The Dynamo found the winner in the third minute of stoppage time with only seconds to go in the match. Creavalle picked up the ball on the right side and sent a looping cross into the box. Sanchez could not get a hand on the cross and Weaver was waiting in the six-yard box to head it into the open net.
The Dynamo Reserves will play their next match on July 10 when they travel to Utah for a matchup against the Real Salt Lake Reserves. The FC Dallas Reserves are next in action on August 29 when they host the Colorado Rapids Reserves at FC Dallas Stadium.
