August 5, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced Monday that right-handed pitcher Jamie Callahan has been named New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week of July 29-August 5.
It is the second straight week Callahan has earned Pitch of the Week honors, the first Spinner to ever earn the honor in consecutive weeks. Brock Huntzinger has previously won the award twice in 2008.
Callahan has been nearly flawless over his last two starts, hurling six one-hit innings July 26 at Connecticut. He faced the minimum 18 batters in that outing to earn the honor for the week, but was even better July 31 against Auburn.
Against the Doubledays, Callahan went six innings, throwing just 71 pitches, retiring all 18 batters he faced without a walk, striking out a career-high nine batters.
The Spinners would carry the perfect game into the ninth inning before a one-out single by Cody Dent, son of Bucky, broke up the bid at perfection.
Callahan, a second round pick of the Red Sox in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, is the youngest starting pitcher in the New York-Penn League, a month away from his 19th birthday.
For the season, Callahan is now 3-1 with a 3.74 earned run average, sporting a 32:9 strikeout-to-walk ratio while limiting opposing batters to a .203 batting average. Over his last two outings, Callahan has faced the minimum 36 batters, striking out 17 with only a Brett Harrison single in Connecticut to blemish his record.
Callahan is on the mound Tuesday as the Spinners kick off a six-game road trip in Ohio against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The team travels on to Staten Island for three with the Yankees before the All-Star Break. The Spinners return to LeLacheur Park Wednesday, August 14 when the start a seven-game homestand for the home stretch of the season. Tickets for that game and all games throughout August remain available at www.LowellSpinners.com.
