July 28, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Butler BlueSox News Release
Butler, PA - Elliott Caldwell set a new Prospect League record for hits in a single season on Friday with his 81st hit, that came on an infield single during the continuation of Thursday night's suspended game at Pullman Park.
Caldwell passed the previous record of 80 hits set last summer by Bryan Lippincott of the Quincy Gems.
The South Carolina native has been the leader of Butler's offense this season; he retains the third best batting average in the League at .377. He has scored 53 runs and stolen 23 bases, which are both BlueSox franchise records.
Lippincott took 56 games to reach the 80-hit mark, whereas Caldwell's 80th hit came in his 50th game. Lippincott was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 19th round of this year's MLB Amateur Draft.
Caldwell hit .217 (10/46) over 30 games as a freshman at Winthrop University this past season. He has been named Prospect League Hitter of the Week twice and was voted to the Prospect League All-Star Game this summer.
Butler has nine games remaining in their 2012 campaign.
