Dubois County Bombers News Release
HUNTINGBURG, Ind. - The Dubois County Bombers scored three in the eighth inning and turned an 8-6 deficit into a 9-8 win over the Hannibal Cavemen Saturday night at League Stadium.
Drew Rosbottom, who made his debut for Dubois County in right field, walked to lead off the eighth. After Bo Ausmus - who had a solo home run, a single and a walk in three at bats - and Austin Nyman were retired, Landon Curry singled to drive in Rosbottom.
Zach Long followed with a triple, knocking in Curry, and scored the go-ahead run two batters later when Jeff Zahn hit a ball to Hannibal second baseman Jake Mangler, whose throw was dropped by first baseman Ian Sikes.
"It's a good win," Zahn said. "We're battling right now. It was good to see things go our way."
Zahn went 3-for-5. His two-run home run in the first put the Bombers ahead 2-0, and his two-run single in the fourth capped a three-run inning that saw the Bombers lead 6-3.
Hannibal responded with a three-run fifth and took an 8-6 lead with a two-run seventh, in part due to some sloppy defense by Dubois County.
Each team, in fact, had some costly errors, and both surrendered two unearned runs.
Kurt Kudrecki earned the win for the Bombers; he struck out the only two men he faced in the eighth after entering with runners on second and third and one out as he relieved Tim Johnson, another Bomber making his debut.
Johnson finished with two and two-thirds innings pitched and allowed one earned run. He had relieved starter Justin Kruse in the fifth inning.
Kruse lasted four and two-thirds and permitted six runs - five earned - on nine hits and three walks while striking out two.
Nick Green pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save.
Hannibal's use of pitchers started in a curious manner. Stefan Simmons retired Curry to start to the game before yielding to Kevin Lenkman, who had been slated as the Cavemen probable pitcher.
Lenkman lasted four and two-thirds innings and ceded six earned runs on eight hits and five walks.
Dustin Carlson pitched the final three innings for the Cavemen and took the loss, as he was responsible for the Bombers' three-run eighth. Only one of those runs, however, was earned.
The Bombers host the Cavemen Sunday at 6:15 p.m., and Jasper product Spencer Sapp gets the start for Dubois County.
"We just have to stay focused and keep going strong," Zahn said.
It's also Family Night, which means that all reserved seats (orange- and red-backed chairs) are discounted two dollars, and general admission tickets are one dollar off.
