Montgomery Biscuits News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Flo. - Genesis Cabrera (7-6) threw 7.1 scoreless innings and the Biscuits (56-48) got an RBI-single from Thomas Milone in the seventh to vault them over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (39-63) for a third-straight night to take the series, 1-0, on Thursday evening at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Cabrera, who was coming off of his first relief appearance of the season, was locked in from the beginning, scattering just three hits and striking out nine for only the third time this season on his way to his seventh victory of the year. The Southern League leader in walks didn't walk a soul on Thursday night.
Jacksonville starter Merandy Gonzalez (1-6) was almost as impressive on the other side, going seven innings, but surrendering the game's lone run on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts. The Biscuits had their first genuine chance to score in the sixth when Mike Brosseau grounded a base hit into right field with Nick Solak at second. Solak tried to score on the single, but was thrown out at the plate by Jumbo Shrimp right fielder John Norwood to keep the game scoreless.
In the seventh, Peter Maris singled and then stole second after Jake Cronenworth popped out to start the inning. After David Rodriguez grounded out to the shortstop, Milone climbed in and punched a single into right to score Maris and provide the Biscuits with the only run they would need on this night.
Cabrera went back out to the mound in the eighth, and after retiring Eric Jagielo on a groundout to third, the southpaw allowed an infield single to Justin Twine, and was then removed for Yoel Espinal. The right-handed flamethrower then struck out Brian Schales on three pitches, and got Rodrigo Vigil to pop out to short to end the inning.
Braxton Lee singled off Espinal to begin the bottom of the ninth, but nobody reached second as the 25-year-old got John Norwood to fly out to right to end the game. It was the second time this month that the Biscuits have beaten the Jumbo Shrimp, 1-0, at the Baseball Grounds (July 2).
The Biscuits will try to make it four-straight victories in the series finale on Friday when Brock Burke (1-0) takes on Kolton Mahoney (3-5).
The Biscuits will return home on Saturday, July 28 for Star Wars Night and MAX Fireworks as the Jackson Generals come to town for a five-game series. The series will also feature Bark in the Park as well as a Biscuits' backpack giveaway on Sunday, July 29, Golden Biscuits Monday on July 30, Dough Fest on Tuesday, July 31, and Military Wednesday and Business Person Specials on August 1.
